Dr Kush Abeysekera is an academic hepatologist with an interest in liver disease epidemiology and public health, based between the University of Bristol and Bristol Royal Infirmary. His research focus is on early detection of cirrhosis strategies and exploring the early development of liver fibrosis in young adults. He leads the liver programme for the Children of the 90s birth cohort study, one of the largest and most phenotyped birth cohorts in the world. In 2023 the British Association for the Study of the Liver awarded him the Dame Sheila Sherlock prize for his PhD exploring the prevalence and determinants of steatotic liver disease in young adults. Following this he was selected as an EASL-AASLD Masterclass Scholar in 2023. Future work will explore the use of therapeutic agents to modify the disease trajectory of patients found to have MASLD during early detection strategies.
