Dr. Sam Engel attended New York University, for both undergraduate and medical degrees. He performed his residency in Internal Medicine at the Bronx Municipal Hospital Center (Jacobi) in the Bronx, NY, and his fellowship in Endocrinology and Metabolism at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, NY. At the completion of his fellowship in 1983, he joined the faculty at Einstein in the Division of Endocrinology. At Einstein, Dr. Engel served as co-director of the Clinical Research Facilitation Core of the Diabetes Research and Training Center, and as the Research Subjects Advocate for the General Clinical Research Center. He was also involved as co-investigator in the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial, and the Diabetes Prevention Program, and as Principal Investigator for the Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications Study (the long-term followup of the DCCT). Dr. Engel joined the Division of Clinical Research in Metabolism at the Merck Research Laboratory in 2006, where he is currently Vice President and Therapeutic Area Head for Atherosclerosis & Metabolism.
